Global and European Governance of Employment Relations

Students taking this module will become familiar with the main supra-national/transnational institutions and regulation of employment relations at global and regional levels. The course will analyse the political and economic developments lying behind the development of global and regional employment relations institutions and regulation and compare and contrast developments in two major regions of the global economy (the European Union and North America). Students will gain depth of knowledge of developments in the European Union, via a critical evaluation of the literature on the nature and development of the European Union’s social dimension.
Topics of the syllabus will include in depth analysis of institutions of supra-national regulation of employment relations, social dumping, international trade unionism, the European-specific experiences of flexicurity, social dialogue, European Works Councils and policies of equal opportunities within the EU.
