Comparative Employment Relations

This module involves both lectures and seminars. In the first four weeks of the module, specific national systems (usually Germany, Sweden, Britain and France, though these are subject to variation) are used as a basis for addressing major themes in cross-national analysis. In the second half, the focus turns to comparative industrial relations and the impact of developments at EU level across sectors. Focus topics include trade unions and industrial conflict ; employers organisation and management strategies ; the state and industrial relations ; employee participation and collective bargaining.
The banking and automotive sectors are used as examples and some of the reading relates specifically to these sectors. However, students are encouraged to research other sectors as well.
