International HRM

This is a module in international human resource management (IHRM). Its primary focus is the employment and human resource practices of multinational companies (MNCs). MNCs are powerful actors. They exercise considerable influence over governments, international institutions and workforces. In this module we assess how MNCs of different national origin operating in varying business sectors seek to manage the employment relationship within their overseas subsidiaries across a variety of institutional settings. In doing so the module will survey the scholarly research on MNCs in both the HRM and international business literatures. The module focuses on a series of inter-related topics including varieties of MNCs convergence and variations in MNCs employment and HR practices and government and labour responses.
