Work and Employment in the Global Economy

This course analyses the impact of globalisation, EU integration processes, and the current economic crisis on work and employment. We will be comparing changes in employment relations in several EU countries with recent developments in the USA and Asia. This comparison will show us that all actors involved in employment relations – namely employers, employees, and the state – not only pursue different interests, but face a variety of choices. On completion of this course you will recognize the key characteristics of the employment relations systems of the most important global economies, and understand why variations in employment regulations and labour standards occur. You will also be able to critically assess the roles played by employers, unions, governments and EU institutions in the globalisation and the EU integration processes. This is a fundamental asset for everybody that aims to understand and improve our working and living conditions.
