Sociology of Organisations

Understanding the complexity of oganizations and their environments. Applications of this understanding to organizational practice.

People make their living through labor, which in modern societies is specialized to various degrees and mostly takes place within organizations. Both specialization and organizations render people strongly interdependent. Accordingly, people create, maintain and change institutions, to curb undesired consequences of interdependences, to coordinate their behavior and to tame the complexity of social life. These institutions and organizations co-evolve with socio-economic networks, exacerbated by ICT. In this course we will address the complexity of organizations, networks and institutions through various theoretical lenses, from micro to macro, related to current scientific debates on the one hand and to global problems - inequality, climate and pollution - on the other hand.
